Travel south from metropolitan Chicago on Interstate 57 and the cityscape quickly changes to farmland. About an hour and 20 minutes south at Gilman, Illinois you exit at Highway 54 where you will see little but field after field of corn and soybeans. Finally you reach Melvin, Illinois, a town that only 200 people call home. Travel down its main street and you will see a reflection or rural America, a once thriving small town now half deserted by the departure of its youth for the city. The short main street has a small bank branch, a grain dealer, a bar and a small convenience store. There’s no traffic light on their main street and no gas station. The rest of the buildings are boarded up or used for storage.
